Dr. Shawn Hervey-Jumper

Neurosurgeon, University of California San Francisco

Dr. Shawn Hervey-Jumper, MD is the Mitchel Berger, MD Endowed Professor of Neurosurgery at University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He is the Medical Director for Neurosurgery, Associate Neurosurgery Residency Director, and an NIH-funded neurosurgeon researcher with a clinical practice focused on the surgical management of patients with brain cancer within functional areas using physiological mapping. In his research laboratory, he seeks to understand the causal mechanisms of brain cancer-induced neuronal circuit remodeling. He aims to uncover molecular drivers and therapeutic targets of activity-dependent tumor proliferation and cancer-induced cognitive impairments. Through these efforts, Dr Hervey-Jumper has served as principal investigator for numerous therapeutic clinical trials.

His lab has identified drivers of clinical trial enrollment for vulnerable patient populations. He teaches neuroscience, cancer biology, and research ethics courses through the UCSF Graduate Education Division. He has led multi-national education efforts in scientific and professional societies such as the Society for Neuro-Oncology and the Tumor Section of AANS/CNS, including education chair, scientific program chair, subspecialty track chair, and deputy director of the neuro-oncology academy.
